Sometimes everything is not as it seems in F1. Ahead of Red Bull taking over Honda's engine project, and creatively calling the engines... 'Red Bull', Edd Straw looks back at some of the more imaginative names given to F1 powerplants in the past.

An honourable mention should also go to Toro Rosso in 2017, their 'Renault' engines were badged as... Toro Rosso, for sponsorship purposes.
BMW didn't really "reverse" its decision to quit F1, Bernie simply took them to court and forced them to honour their contract
Alfa - Osella, you can't use our name with your team, your results were so bad Also Alfa - No points in 1985 with their own team.
5:24 ... those nails..
Anyone else getting lost or confused while watching this?!?!
BULL-POWER
Top quality video. How many years/times did Mercedes put their badges on Ilmor F1 engines before they 100% took over the company? There was a great story of Ilmor testing for a big Indy Car race with Mercedes waiting at the gate with a truck load of stickers. It was quick, so they handed Ilmor a wad of cash, proceeding to rebadge it just in time for the race which iirc they won.
What If Mobil 1 Made It's Own Power Unit?
8:09 they won 9 Ricciardo won at China 2018
"Red Bull powered by HyperActive".
PorschE, not Porsch! Jeez... not Jesus! 😁 And RiccIardo and not Ricardo!
Megatron. How ‘80s can you get 😜 brilliant
1:58 Sauber using Mercedes engines was due to their relationship from Group C racing. What could've been.....
30 second un-skippable ad before this. Disgusting
"Badges? We don't need no stinking badges."
I remember McLaren TAG, Sauber Petronas, Williams Mecachrome, Benetton Playlife & BAR Supertec etc.
a ferrari engined car with petronas and red bull sponsors lol the irony
You know in the early 60's there was an engine supplier called Climax. It w was the engine that helped Jack Brabham (Brabham Climax) and Jim Clark (Lotus Climax) to win 2 championships respectively. Imagine having that name in our times ;)
Did Daniel Ricciardo not win China 2018 in a TAG Heuer badged RB?
@13:20 .... Cans of Energy ... thats the most proper name for red bull engines... however .. i do not look at that with a lot of optimism... building engines is a whole different ballgame to producing energy drinks and investing money to have your name on things
call it what it is, honda...they are honda engines...maybe they might consider coming back to the sport if they get the recognition they deserve in their eyes. honda has a long and great history here and itd be a shame to continue this global sport without the great history honda brings.
Cosworth: Our legacy will live on Judd: lmao no Yamaha: lmao no
8:09 you forgot the 2018 Chinese GP when Ricciardo put on an overtaking masterclass to win the race
If Red Bull call the engine Red Bull , people might put the jus in the fuel tank.
Me: Optimus prime
Ronda gives you wings
Why does he pronounce Heuer correctly but not Porsche correctly? Very weird.
Red Bull Caffeine Cans should do it. Nice accurate branding.
They should call it 'Honda', 'cos that's what it is !
Dude smoking a cigarette showing of his snow nail on the ring finger :)
"Not powered by Honda."
RB should have called their engine Monster.
How gorgeous was that 93 Sauber. Pure sex
Fun fact: in the 2000 season, all 11 teams had differently-badged engines, partly thanks to the Fondmetal/Playlife/Petronas deals. By 2014, there were only three different engine badges on the grid - Ferrari, Mercedes, and Renault. I really miss the engine diversity of 2000s F1.
@Dominik Krzemiński BMW and Toyota pulled out after 2009, Cosworth pulled out after 2013, and Honda didn't return until 2015. 2014 only had three engine suppliers.
Hey! What about Honda, BMW, Cosworth, and Toyota?
Great video.
Oh you have no idea how long I've been waiting for a video like this. I'm delighted to see the engine names that were on this list. Megatron (BMW), Tag (Porsche) Petronas (Ferrari) and Asiatech (Peugeot) especially stand out here.
BMW Megatron is such a cool name. 😂👍
11:24 Decepticon, Rise Up!!
What people like Brian Hart and John Judd were able to achieve on shoestring budgets was amazing. A video on those two would be awesome (maybe including Mario Illien)
0:13 "Honda r-engines"
Red Bull should call them "Max"!!
What made some of those engine names more weird? The pronunciation used for some of them in this video. Petronas was perhaps the worst. I love the details added in through the research, but give the narrator a chance with names by researching their pronunciation and giving them at least a basic phonetic form to use as part of the script.
1. Mugen is NOT owned by Honda so get over it people. 2. Congrats to the FIRST person who noticed DRs 2018 China win missing and nice try to all you imitators out there who saw that comment and then put your own acting like you know sh!t. 3. Same to those saying Megatron should be no.1 like you could remember and hadn't watched or jumped to the end of the video. 😂🤦♂️
Redbull should call their engine "The Engine" Imagine the originality
"Bullish" it's an aggressive name but tbh if for nothing else because you just know some commentator/reporter somewhere will slip up and say bullish!t on live tv 😂
Great, now use format for the team name and we get Red Bull Red Bull Racing Red Bull.
All hail Megatron!🙌🏽
If I was Honda, I'd laser engrave all parts 2022+ with "HONDA OEM PART"
waiting for optimus prime to come up with an engine in 2022
You know you've run out of content when...
8:10 You also forgot 2018 China
Why do brits pronounce it as “hondar” and more recently “yamahar”????
No mention of the Mugen powered Jordans?
Mugen has always had very close ties to Honda: it’s founder was the son of Honda’s founder. It was also badged Mugen-Honda, as Mugen were the ones who prepared the engines and also continued to develop them in the mid-1990s when Honda dropped out of their F1 involvement before coming back at the end of the decade.
Ferrari should have used the name Deceptioncon for their old oil burners
😂
(Megatron engine blows up) *YOU FAILED ME FOR THE LAST TIME STARSCREAM*
I love megatron
BT55 is the best looking f1 car of all time. Change my mind.
Megatron #1 on Name Alone...NO NO NO!!! IMO Reorder at the Top 1. TAG-Porsche 2. Post-97 Renault Badges (MC/PL/ST) 3. Megatron Reward Success and Name equally here Edd come on
Weird names but seems excellent.
TIL the Playlife logo was upside down and mirrored
Why Red Bull didnt call their engines "Optimus Prime" is beyond me. They would've made the Mercedes look like Decepticons
Should have gone with "Toro"... like the lawnmowers
Silly Red bull based idea? They do a Toro Rosso & name their 2022 units Reddoburus? I can work with that (Phonetic translation as I don't have a clue how to do Japanese typeface)
Are we not going to talk about that Petronas pronunciation..? 😂
Red bush call their engines 0 F‘s given
Can i say, daniel ricciardo won the 2018 Chinese gp so its 9 gp won under tag heuer
This is a gem of a video
Rich Energy power units, duh
Red Bull should just get rights to name the engine from Mugen. Or Spoon. Or Amuse
I think what will happen for Redbull next year, tag will probably want to do something that happened 2016-2018
Clearly the name of the RB 2022 engine should be: Bob.
Damn that 3-week break is hitting y'all hard
Power Can
Redbull powered by Rich Energy
5:23 TRIM YOUR FINGERNAILS PAUL
Disgusting
Typical 90s smoker
Damn I was looking forward to Redbull finally developing they're own ICE unit. Now we gotta wait until no earlier than 2024!!!
Man how about a vid on that fine for a Ricciardo upgrade slam? I cant find a damn thing on that anywhere. Considering current events it would be pretty interesting to hear more about his time at Red Bull.
Agreed. I had never heard of that before either.
Darn f1cars kept interrupting all those informative adverts
Playlife is the silliest name for a racing engine ever. It sounds like a brand of lingerie
Well, it is a fashion brand from what I remember so it wouldn't be a stretch.
Megatron: tuned by swiss-based *hiney murder* thx youtube subtitles LOL
Excellent content as usual 👏👏👏
what bout Life Racing Engines
Who cares about the engines? Those old cars look fabulous compared to the current ones!
That's not the topic of the video mate.
12:30 Looks good! 👍
RB should call their engines "Wings"
Should be called Red Bull - Mugen-Honda
@Ren I've heard that Mugen are going to help RB to build and service Honda engines from 2022 onwards.
The Mugen-Honda engines were called Mugen-Honda since Mugen actually did a lot of development work, as well as being the company responsible for preparing the engines for the team. Mugen aren’t owned by Honda, despite their close ties, so Honda can’t just request for that to happen.
The Prost AP04 was GORGEOUS
Ok one more time...Is this channel F1 only? and is Sam Collins still a part of The race? Been asking for a few vids now but no reply. (would really like to know)
@V8Hilux Ty, I been watching races on GTWorld this season, was wondering why the race hasn't been streaming. I hope they do again asap. Once again ty for replying.
Sam Collins has moved to F1 for his F1 talk but he was still doing live race commentary on The Race and still mispronouncing Supra. I think they still do live races there just haven't been any yet... I personally don't care for all the esports crap so more than happy if that's stopped.
Tag heur batched renaults won 9 grandprix
At 8:08 You missed out Ricciardo also winning the 2018 Chinese GP.
I would love to see Redbull emerge as an elite engine manufacturer
Soon: Top 10 best fans in the world rated by Lewis Hamilton.
I'm sure it will be a diverse list.
Wtf is this circle jerk 🤦♂️
Spoiler: They are all the best.
hahahahaha
mugen ??
Separate entity to Honda.
Anyone else love the Sauber Petronas (and Red Bull) livery? Beautiful.
But still, any of them is better than the current Red Bull, Sauber, or Petronas livery.
There's so many good Sauber Red Bull liveries. 1997 was a beaut
I really like the 2004 version of it
Yes
Yup the Red Bull Sauber Petronas livery is still imo the best Red Bull livery.
The cringe factor of AsiaTech is almost on par with the cringe factor of my country and its KiwiBuild KiwiSaver KiwiBank and KiwiFarms.
Mugen Honda. 1998
KTM
I always though the Mclaren Gaytime was the weirdest engine name.
Red bull should call the engines something rediculous like “super mega hot dog number one cowboy space rocket USA engines”
Yeah or something like merc’ killer or similar
Who sees the title to this video, watches it and then gives it a thumbs down? How idiotic can people be?
