What Alonso is still lacking on his F1 return

Fernando Alonso's first F1 race since 2018 ended in retirement after a busy evening scrapping in the midfield for Alpine. It wasn't the way he would have wanted his comeback to start off, but there were positives to take from the weekend, and plenty of areas where he believes he still needs more time to get himself back to 100%

  • Its Alonso. The lion. King of the jungle. No bigger jungle than the F1 jungle. Of course he's straight back in at Q3 with an average car. Outperforming a teammate almost half his age is also very much expected.

  • Alonso: talk talk talk. Reality: no result when the car is not flawless. Wait a few races, he'll get mad and negative again towards the team or engine. In a few months he'll threathen to leave F1 again. He done this 2 times already and y'all still hyping him up? Come on!

  • Haters will continue to hate. Like him or not the fact is that he is one of the best race drivers ever. 2 WDC, Le Mans, WEC championship, Daytona. But 2007 the LH fans will say, Lewis showed how good he was but Nando was hobbled at times and let it all get to him. Given the same machinery as LH he would have won just as much, if you deny that you are not truly a F! follower. The fact is he hasn't and LH will be statistically the GOAT. I'm hoping Alpine give him a good car next year and we can see some real action!

  • Alonso is already looking better than Vettel after just one race. No matter what excuse you come up with for the German, it applies twice fold to Alonso who's been out of the sport altogether for a few years. Alonso always said of Vettel during his hey days that we'll see Vettel's true talent when he has a less than perfect car and boy have we seen him struggle and heard him complain and blame every one else since 2014. I'm so glad Alonso is back bc his talent has been missed.

  • My view: I have no doubt in Alonso's ability, if he had an opportunity to drive a Mercedes for one race, he would very likely win the event. That is such a shame about F1 that you need the best car to to win races or have a chance at winning races. It has been this way for many many years. It is why maybe drivers such rotate around the grid and not be fixed to teams, this way everyone gets each car. Just remember what the slowest on the grid did when he got the fastest car last year. F1 is full of heroic drivers who drive on the limit without crashing Max, Lewis, Charles, Pierre, Daniel and many more. They all have the ability to win races IF only the car didn't let them down in performance. It would certainly be a lot closer championship if you did rotate the drivers. The majority of the pay could be to do with sponsorships due to achieving success in the championship and also based on your position at the end of the year. Teams owning drivers is the past, Alonso's talent is proof change is needed to bring balance to elite motorsport. Qualifying could be done in one car per race and each driver gets an amount of laps to time attack the current lead tie time. Maybe it could be staggered by starting the drivers just after one has completed a lap.

  • Despite only having two world titles, Alonso is one of the best racing drivers of all time. If not the best. However, he's been consistently appalling at picking teams and I am not sure at this point that Alpine can deliver this time either. He deserves his third world title, but we all know that driving skills alone don't win championships.

Sure, I would have liked to see him in a team and car worthy of his talent, which the Alpine, sadly, is currently not, although it would have been better minus one bicycle accident and jaw surgery and minus one sandwich wrapper or whatever that was in that break duct. Still the team seems better that the car Vettel landed in, so it could have been worse I am hopeful that we'll see improvement from team and car. Formula-1 needs it badly.
